2018 Movie Story

We follow Anup’s (Tovino Thomas) adventure as he leaves the army out of fear of dying in “2018.” Mathachan (Lal) and his son Winston (Narain), who are fishermen, are also significant figures in the story. While Ramesh (Vineeth Srinivasan), an IT worker in Dubai, struggles with his wife back in India, Koshy (Aju Varghese) drives a cab for tourists. In addition, Sethupathi (Kalayirasan) consents to drive a vehicle carrying explosives to Kerala. The tale reveals the challenges of our characters and the effects of the catastrophe on the people of Kerala as the disastrous floods that ravaged Kerala in 2018 take place. How do they endure this terrible catastrophe? The movie, however, has all the answers!

👍 Plus Points

Few films can grab audiences and carry them along on an emotional trip with the characters, but “2018” succeeds in doing exactly that. The tale is straightforward and devoid of significant changes, yet it shines because to its superbly developed characters and narration.

Jude Anthany Joseph, the director, has a talent for producing compelling stories that move us. Although the characters can be confusing in the first half, the second half makes the director’s goals obvious. He effectively portrays heart-wrenching emotions so that you experience every scene as it plays out on television, engagingly presenting the story.

Despite not being the protagonist, Tovino Thomas deserves praise for selecting this script. His transformation from a guy who dreads death to a fearless hero who battles against all difficulties to save countless lives is brilliantly shown in his character arc. Lal has a standout performance as Mathachan, a fisherman who makes a crucial decision to save thousands of people from the disastrous floods. While the rest of the ensemble does well in their individual parts, Narain and Kalayirasan also make an impression with their outstanding performances.

The film’s outstanding camera work and outstanding background soundtrack, in addition to the tale, help to create a tense atmosphere, especially in the second half. They significantly contribute to improving the entire experience and retaining viewers.

👎 Minus Points

The minimal attention paid to the role of the government and the media throughout the difficult moments of the year is one area where “2018” falls short.

Kerala floods in 2018. Although the director’s main goal is to elevate humanity above all else, it would have been advantageous to emphasise the government’s and the media’s efforts in managing the issue.

Unfortunately, Aparna Balamurali, a well-known face in the movie, doesn’t have much of a presence on screen. She should have been in more scenes, which the filmmaker could have done to give the story more depth.

As the filmmaker focuses more on the individuals and their personal difficulties than the primary narrative in the first half of the film, viewers may become confused. Tanvi Ram and Gauthami Nair are two examples of characters who don’t significantly contribute to the broader plot, which leaves viewers feeling unfulfilled. These tiny weaknesses are made up for by the movie’s emotional depth, which keeps you interested the entire time.

Additionally, the filmmaker might have increased the tension by include sequences that showed the dam’s deterioration, which would have improved the narrative.

🎬 Technical Aspects

Jude Anthany Joseph deserves praise for bringing to life a realistic tale that explores people’s concerns and their resolve to ultimately stand up for one another during a natural disaster. His writing is also deserving of acclaim, especially in the second half, as he deftly captures the peoples’ unfiltered feelings.

Thanks to the outstanding work of the production design team, cinematographer Akhil George, and composer Nobin Paul, the movie is a technical triumph.

Although Chaman Chakko’s editing is passable, a few moments in the first half should have been cut to make the experience more efficient. A suspenseful mood is effectively created by the VFX work, and the production qualities are impressive. The audience may fully immerse themselves in the movie thanks to the excellent Telugu dubbing.

Verdict

In conclusion, “2018” is a masterfully created movie that arouses powerful feelings and offers exciting moments. The film’s greatest assets are Tovino Thomas, Lal, and Narain’s outstanding performances, together with the outstanding soundtrack and mesmerising cinematography. ‘2018’ has several high moments that will keep you completely engrossed in its emotional tapestry despite a few pointless scenes. Don’t wait to see this movie this weekend—it will be worth your time!
